Dorika Burla and her friend Dora

This is my sister Dorika (on the right), who today lives in Israel. Here she was photographed with a friend, who was also called Dora. She was the daughter of a big tobacco merchant in Thessaloniki. She went to America because her parents tried to arrange her marriage which she did not want.

We nicknamed her Tarzan because she would climb up the mountains to spot if any Germans were coming, she was fearless. After our escape from Thessaloniki, Dorika, like the rest of the familly became a partisan and fought against the Germans. There was no way the Germans could catch her! After the war she went to Israel. Dora is now 51 years old. She managed to get the attention of the Israeli government and take us from the islands where we had been sent, and bring us to Israel.
