This photo was taken of my husband and I in 1976 in the Podebrady Spa. My husband went every year to the spa, because he had heart problems, and I always escorted him. There was a clock here, he stayed here, and across from it was this clock and the stature.
In those times, a lot of Jews went to the spa. The old folks' home and the bet medresh were close by. The locals went there and the Jews who were getting treatments in the bath also, every Friday evening or Saturday morning. We also took part in the ceremony. There wasn't a rabbi in Podebrady, just a prayer leader.
My husband and I would often walk to the Labe river bank, to visit a museum, and then we went to the nearby Jewish cemetery. It wasn't an orthodox cemetery, people brought flowers to the graves of their loved ones.
In the summers, we vacationed in Luhacovice. While the children were small, my father also came with me. My husband came out on the weekends, so he was together with us on Saturday and Sunday. He rarely took a vacation. We took walks, had conversations. Every year we went on summer vacation. I've been to Karlovy Vary [Karlsbad] for problems with my gall bladder, as well as Bartfa for treatments. My husband had a heart attack, so every year for more than ten years we went to the spa in Podebrady.
We also went to company and union resorts [resort hotels/hostels for employee or member use]. We went to Balaton, and I always got my entrance pass to Karlovy Vary from the union. We first were awarded an travel permit abroad in 1977.
